Deutschnofen
Family resort area south of Bolzano
South of the Eggental Valley is the beautiful town of Deutschnofen. The slightly hilly plateau around the village offers ideal conditions for families to walk, hike and mountain bike. Those who want something more challenging can drive to the Latemar, to the Rosengarten group or to the White Horn mountain – there is a stunning view of these three mountains from Deutschnofen. In addition to the walking and cycling paradise on the Regglberg mountain, the resort of Obereggen and the Obereggen-Latemar ski area are also located directly in the valley. Bolzano, the Karrersee lake, the Fassa and the Fiemme valleys in the Trentino are also just a stone’s throw away.
Attractions in Deutschnofen
Deutschnofen is a popular pilgrimage destination mainly because of two religious buildings: the parish church of St Ulrich and the pilgrimage church of Maria Weissenstein. The late-Gothic parish church has a Gothic winged altar by Hans von Judenburg with five magnificent wood reliefs. The valuable altar was originally in Bolzano, but was moved to Deutschnofen during the baroquisation of the churches there. Today it is the jewel of the church.
Maria Weissenstein
Just south of Deutschnofen, near the town of Petersberg, there is the pilgrimage church of Maria Weissenstein, which is a popular destination for tens of thousands of pilgrims every year. Pilgrims have been coming here since the middle ages to be healed by the mother of God. According to a legend, the small chapel was built by a farmer of Weissenbach. It was a plea to the Virgin Mary for salvation because he had fallen into a ravine. Due to the many pilgrims, the chapel was, however, quickly turned into a church and later extended several times by the Servite order until it assumed its present appearance. On the Feast Days of Mary, the church is packed with numerous pilgrims – even Pope John Paul II attended.
