The Ampezzo Valley
The most famous valley of the Belluno Dolomites
Probably the most well-known valley of the Belluno Dolomites is the Ampezzo. Its centre, Cortina d’Ampezzo, is located 1200 metres above sea level and is one of the most popular and best-known winter and summer sports resorts in the Dolomites. The surrounding peaks are generally higher than 2000 metres: The highest among them are the Tofana di Mezzo at 3244 metres and the Cristallo at 3216 metres. The Ampezzo itself has long been part of Austria and was absorbed into Belluno only in 1919. According to the Autonomy Law of 1973, the region plans to renew its annexation to the autonomous South Tyrol.
