Valeggio sul Mincio
Romantic town along the Mincio river
At first glance the small town along the Mincio river looks relatively inconspicuous. However, the historic centre is a paradise for romantics. An old wooden bridge leads to the picturesque old mill district, which is characterised by numerous old houses, mills and cosy restaurants. Borghetto is the name of this picturesque medieval town, which you should definitely visit and stroll through the narrow streets and linger in the cafes.
A few hundred metres to the north the 600-metre-long Ponte Visconti crosses the Mincio. The massive structure was originally a dam by the Visconti that was intended to dry Mantua in the south, but was never completed and served as a bridge from then to now. In 1439 the powerful Ponte Visconti was the deciding factor that explained why the Venetians could not lead their fleet over the Mincio into Lake Garda, and so they hatched the mad plan to carry their ships over the mountains near Torbole. Since 1993, the 600-year anniversary of the bridge, the “feast of love knots” (Festa del nodo d’amore) is celebrated every year. Every year, 140 chefs make some 600,000 tortellini which are eaten by some 4,000 guests on the bridge. The famous festival is usually booked up months in advance, and if you want to participate you should make sure to get your tickets in time (tickets www.valeggio.org).
