Castiglione delle Stiviere
The roots of the Red Cross
When speaking of Henry Dunant and the foundation of the Red Cross, everyone talks about the small town of Solferino. It was doubtless here that a raging battle took place between Italy and Austria in 1859. However, the wounded were brought to Castiglione delle Stiviere where they were treated in the Chiesa Maggiore. Henry Dunant was also witness to the untold suffering and took his decision to found the Red Cross. Nevertheless Solferino was entered into history books as the birthplace of the movement. But Castiglione delle Stiviere is also worth a visit. The Chiesa Maggiore church is still to be found in the old town and the adjacent Palazzo Triulzi-Longhi houses the Museo Internazionale della Croca Rossa (Museum of the International Red Cross). Here you can admire stretchers, transport carriages, surgical instruments and many documents, paintings and photographs of the Battle of Solferino and the development of the Red Cross – a great place for anyone interested in the topic.
