Lignano

Holidays on the largest beach in Friuli

Lignano is the largest holiday town in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The beach is nearly 8 km long, extending from the mouth of the Tagliamento along the small town. Parallel to the beach is the shore road and a thick pine forest, which enhance the holiday character of the place considerably. Numerous public beach areas are lined up along the coast, including admission-free sections among the many swimming areas that are accessible for a charge. Lignano itself consists of the three districts Riviera, Sabbiadoro and Pineta. Lignano is popular among young Austrians who spend their summer holidays here. The Aqua Splash water park, the Luna Park, a zoo and the Gulliverlandia theme park also offer families excellent facilities.

Attractions in Lignano

The concrete walls in the centre radiate relatively little charm, and with its many unattractive buildings you might not think that this was a popular holiday destination. The landmark of the town is a concrete bridge with a mussel-shaped design – the Terrazza Mare. Many of the hotels in Lignano look dull and shabby from the outside, but are modernised inside and offer very high levels of comfort. The church of Santa Maria del Mare in the centre houses some frescoes from the 15th century. In 1953 Ernest Hemingway visited the city – the large city park is named after him.

Surroundings of Lignano

The small town of Latisana is located 20 km in land. The most significant sight here is the Church of San Giovanni Battista, which houses the valuable panel painting “The Baptism of Christ” by Paolo Veronese. Also worth visiting is the small town of Palazzolo dello Stella. The Museo dello Stella at the Casa del Marinaretto on the main square contains a fine collection of Roman finds from the area. Among the exhibits here are the remains of two Roman ships. The village’s three churches are home to frescoes from the 13th and 15th century. The creators were the famous painter “Il Pordenone” (Parish Church of Santo Stefano) and a student of Master Giotto (Chiesa di San Bartolomeo). The river region north of the town is great for hiking and walking. Here you will find wonderful vegetation, an ancient fortress, old mills and warehouses that were once used for trading on the river.
