Lago d’Idro
Mountain lake in Lombardy
The Lago d’Idro is located in the heart of Lombardy. Located at 368 metres above sea level, it counts as a mountain lake. The area of grassland along the shore makes it the ideal destination for campers, which explains why large numbers of Dutch tourists have been coming here for years. You cannot drive around the lake – only on the west bank there is a road from Lodrone via Anfo to Idro. A particularly interesting sight in Anfo is the mighty Venetian fortress from the 19th century, which was also the headquarters of Garibaldi. From Idro you can reach the Monte Stino where you can enjoy a wonderful view over the Lago d’Idro and the surrounding mountains and hills. From Lodrone it is worthwhile making a short trip to the idyllic mountain village of Bagolino. The Venetians dug here for iron ore and helped make the small village prosperous and wealthy. Taking a short walk through the historic centre is definitely worth it. Bagolino can also be visited in the winter – the local carnival with its magnificent costumes and masks is famous far beyond the borders of the village.
