Isola di Garda
The largest island in Lake Garda
Directly in front of the peninsula of San Fermo lies Lake Garda’s largest island, Isola di Garda. The beautifully wooded island houses a magnificent Venetian castle and beautiful gardens and comes with a majestic coastline. Charlemagne once bequeathed the beautiful island to the monks of San Zeno in Verona who were just a few of its many owners. St. Francis of Assisi and St. Bernardino also came here, as well as Dante Alghieri and St. Antonio. The magnificent palace with its beautiful gardens was built by the Duke of Ferrari. Today the island and the palace are owned by the Borghese Cavazza family. It was only at the beginning of the third millennium that they decided to open the island to the public. From April to September you can now ferry across the lake by boat and enjoy a two-hour tour through the gardens and parts of the castle. Of course you can also buy the homemade products such as oil, wine and fruits at the end of the tour.
