Gargnano
Vibrant village on the western shore of Lake Garda
Gargnano is the northernmost village of the Brescia Riviera. The pretty little village is not as frequented by tourists as many other towns at Lake Garda. Although it is still quite busy throughout the year, Gargnano has been able to preserve its originality. The University of Milan also has a small language school here. Many young Italians and students can therefore be found in Gargnano, which is a small village with a lot of flair and vibrancy. It is interesting to note that it was in the Villa Feltrinelli that Benito Mussolini was arrested after his dismissal by Hitler.
Attractions in Gargnano
The impressive church of San Martino, which is located in the north of Gargnano, is certainly worth visiting. It has some beautiful oil paintings and the famous Virgin of Moretto in the high altar. The monastery of San Francesco is located to the south of the port. It was built in the 13th century and has a beautiful cloister with Romanesque and late Gothic elements. Certainly one of the highlights of Gargnano but unfortunately not open to the public is the Palazzo Bettoni. It was built on the model of Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna and is one of the largest and most beautiful buildings around Lake Garda. It should also be mentioned here as well that, due to lack of space, the main road, the Gardasena, leads through the property, diminishing significantly the overall impression of the privately owned palazzo.
