Torri del Benaco
Place of Interest
Torri del Benaco
Fortress city on the eastern shore of Lake Garda
The more unassuming Torri del Benaco is situated between the tourist resorts of Malcésine and Garda. The small town still provides flair and offers an outstanding landmark. Especially if you look at Torri del Benaco from the lakeside of Lake Garda the interesting position and the powerful Scaliger castle catch your eye. In general, the village is very well maintained. The harbour is very quiet and the Piazza Calderini with its shops and restaurants attract visitors to stay. While strolling through the historic old town you benefit from a friendly village away from the main tourist bustle.
Attractions in Torri del Benaco
A landmark of Torri del Benaco and also the main attraction is the old Scaliger Castle from the 14th century. The mighty fortress was built in 1383 and occupied only four years later by the Visconti. Although vacant since this time, the castle is well preserved. The walls and all three towers are still accessible and you can enjoy a good view over the rooftops of the city. Inside it houses a small museum about the living conditions of the people around Lake Garda and a 300-year-old lemon grove. Another interesting sight is the church of Santi Pietro e Paolo with its magnificent organ case in the north of the city. The massive tower next to the church, the Tower of Berengario, is the remains of an old Lombard fortress which gave the place its name.
