Bardolino
Famous wine town at Lake Garda
The name Bardolino is usually less associated with a place than with the excellent red wine that is grown in the hinterland of Bardolino. But the small town is getting more and more popular today. What was once considered an insider tip at Lake Garda can now almost compete with the tourist resorts of Garda, Malcesine and Riva del Garda. The reasons are, besides the wine, its famous wine festival in September, good location and, above all, the ambience of the historic centre. A lakeside promenade enclosed by two headlands, a beautiful old town and more and more attractive cafes, restaurants and hotels attract increasing numbers of tourists to Bardolino every year.
Attractions in Bardolino
Anyone who travels to Barodlino should be sure not to miss one special attraction – the wine museum. Thanks to an increasing tourist flow, the Zeni estate has converted the main house into an attractive wine museum, which provides a lot of information concerning the production of the famous wine. Of course, the tour ends in the wine cellar where you can taste many wines and also buy them. Another interesting sight is the Oil Museum of Bardolino, which informs visitors about the production of oil. This interesting exhibition tells you everything you need to know about the precious product – and there is even a 14th-century oil mill on display. A tasting session in a well-stocked showroom also comes included.
In terms of art and cultural history, Bardolino has three interesting religious buildings to offer. The church of San Severo is the most important building in the Veronese style in the entire Lake Garda region. Inside there are frescoes from the 11th century and a Lombard crypt. The Romanesque church of Santa Maria dates from 1130 and houses important ornamental plates on its walls. The church tour ends with the hidden church of San Zeno. The remains of frescoes from the 12th century and capitals are worth a visit.
