Campione
A village with 150 souls on the rocky cliffs
150 residents living in a few houses clinging to a narrow spit of land under the rock face – this is Campione. If you approach from the lake side, this wonderful display appears increasingly remote the closer you get. By 1930 the village was accessible only from the lake and the last cotton mill closed in 1980 – since then the little village has become more and more dilapidated. Although some houses were restored in recent years and additional shops were built, most tourists don’t stay in the village for long. Only the sailors appreciate Campione because of the good winds just before the rocky coast. In peak season the lake teems with boats and a local sailing and windsurfing school is big business.
