Palazzo degli Orfei (Palazzo Fortuny)
Workshop of Mariano Fortuny
Right on Campo San Benedetto is the Palazzo degli Orfei, which is also known as the Palazzo Fortuny. Its two rows of Gothic arches make it the focal point of the plaza. From 1899 to 1949 the palace was the home and workplace of the Spanish designer Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo from Granada. Fortuny was especially famous for his precious plissee fabrics and silk lamps. He gained worldwide fame with his tunic modelled on a Greek dress of silk satin. From then on he counted the famous stage stars as well as the rich and famous in the world among his customers. In 1919 Fortuny patented his method to stabilise plissee effects.
In the integrated small Museo Fortuny in the Palazzo degli Orfei you can admire some of his unusual designs.
