Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo
The most beautiful courtyard in Venice
The Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo is very inconspicuously located. No wonder, because it is not famous for having a canal-facing façade, which is all important in Venice, but rather for its courtyard. You can see a remarkable spiral staircase (Venetian: bovolo) there. It was built in 1500 by Giovanni Candi in the courtyard of the palace and connects all five balconies of the building. With its round-arched arcades the beautiful spiral staircase is almost reminiscent of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. And if you can face the hike up the stairs you will be rewarded with a nice view over the rooftops of Venice from the upper floors.
