La Rotonda – the octagonal church
A particular eye-catcher at the Piazza XX Settembre is the octagonal church of Beata Vergine del Soccorso, also known as La Rotonda. It was built at the end of the 16th century by Francesco Zamberlan, a student of Palladio, and was originally supposed to be the location for a statue of the Madonna and Child. The peculiar church was not only used for worship but also for other events and meetings, and even as a camp.
The interior of the Beata Vergine del Soccorso suggests that the exterior to the Piazza XX Settembre doesn’t mark the actual main portal, but was supposed to be originally at the side entrance to the Via IV Novembre. The octagonal interior of the church is decorated by many paintings from the 17th century. Among them are works by artists such as Francesco Maffei, Andrea Cekesti and Alessandro Varolari. A valuable organ by the famous Venetian organ builder Gaetano Callido can also be found in the “La Rotonda”.
