Travelling to Rovigo
Holidays in the Po Delta
Rovigo, capital of the homonymous province, is located in the middle of the Polesine, the most scenic stretch of land between the Po and the Adige. A large part of the province is traversed by rivers and canals, forming a unique and charming landscape. The Po Delta itself is one of the largest wetlands in Europe and is the ideal location for holidaymakers seeking relaxation and delightful tours off the main tourist routes. The capital of Rovigo offers its visitors a beautiful historic centre and numerous pavement cafés, restaurants and also some sights.
Journey to Rovigo: Between history and nature
Rovigo is not only the capital of the homonymous province, but is also the centre of the Polesine – the strip of land bounded by the rivers Po and Adige. The Polesine is half land, half sea and is traversed by numerous canals and rivers. Six tributaries of the Po River flow here into the Po Delta in the Adriatic and flood on fertile sand that has been used for centuries by local farmers for cultivation. However, the exposed location in the delta also brings disadvantages – regular flooding of large parts of the land keep the local people constantly on the go. Back in Roman times, people tried to regulate the river course with dams and sluices more or less successfully. Except for flooding, all the projects succeeded and a settlement in the Po Delta has become possible.
Journey to Rovigo and surroundings
Rovigo has a long and varied history and the constant deposits of the Po not only constantly changed the landscape but also led to the consistent establishment of new settlements and towns on the newly acquired land. Therefore former coastal villages developed into small towns inland and new coastal villages were founded. The Po Delta is therefore subject to constant change, so bathers and holidaymakers tend to stay further north – the delta itself is an insider’s tip for travellers seeking relaxation off the main tourist routes. Reason enough for a visit to Rovigo and at least to make a short stop and visit the beauties of the province.
