Sant'Agata al Carcere

Church in honour of St. Agatha

The church of Sant'Agata al Carcere is located not far from the amphitheatre at the Piazza Carcere. It was built in honour of St. Agatha, Catania's patron saint. Inside the church you can still see the prisons in which Agatha was detained before her martyrdom. The beautiful portal of the church dates from the 13th Century – it was originally attached to the cathedral of Catania before the earthquake in 1693.
