Basilica di Porta Maggiore
Subterranean place of worship in Rome
Near the Piazza di Porta Maggiore archaeologists found the ruins of an ancient basilica from the 1st Century 13 metres below ground. The basilica was probably built underground in the ancient world and, with a porch, three-nave interior and semicircular apse, it already has the typical characteristics of a Christian basilica. Mosaic floors, stucco ceilings and painting cycles from mythology, however, suggest that the present ruins of the sanctuary are the remains of an ancient sect that believed in the redemption of the soul in the afterlife just like Christianity.
