Palazzo Massimo alle Colonne
Mannerist palace in Rome
The Palazzo Massimo alle Colonne was built in 1536 on the ruins of two houses of the Massimo family and is considered to be a masterpiece of the architect Baldassare Peruzzi. The two previous buildings were destroyed in the sack of Rome in 1527 by Charles V. The palace was built in the style of mannerism and loses its monumental gravity due to the relaxing of the basic style of the building. The result is an almost elegant structure, which is enhanced by the curvature of the façade and the idiosyncratic window frames.
