Palazzo della Cancelleria
Beautiful Renaissance palace in Rome
The Palazzo della Cancelleria was built in 1483 by Cardinal Riaro and served later as the seat of government of the Papal States. Because of the Western Schism and the dispute between the popes, Rome lost cultural influence to the northern Italian city states of Florence, Milan and Venice. With the construction of the Palazzo della Cancelleria, the government wanted to herald the restart of the cultural supremacy of Rome. The architects were Andrea Bregno and Bramante. The main façade is made of travertine, which was taken from the Colosseum and is considered to be a masterpiece of the Renaissance.
The highlight inside is the "Hall of the Hundred Days". Vasari painted the courtroom on behalf of Cardinal Farnese in 100 days, which - according to a traditional quote from Michelangelo - can be seen. The remains of a basilica from the 4th Century were found in the 1980s in the courtyard.
