Basilica Giovanni Battista
Onion church of St John
Due to extensive renovations in recent centuries, it is unknown when the Basilica San Giovanni Battista was built exactly. The bell tower, however, points to an origin prior to the 9th century. The basilica was completely rebuilt by Pietro Grossi in 1683 and refurbished multiple times in later years. Its inside features a Neapolitan nativity scene and works by regional painters that originated between the 15th and 18th century.
In order to differentiate this church from the Basilica San Giovanni Evangelista, it is commonly known as "Sân Zvan dla zôla" ("Saint John of the onion") due to the onion festival that takes place every June in the churchyard during the celebrations for Saint John.
