Basilica di Sant'Agata Maggiore
One of Ravenna's oldest churches
Basilica di Sant'Agata Maggiore, one of the city's oldest churches, is located in close proximity to the San Francesco Crypt. Its origin dates back to the 5th century during the episcopacy of Peter II, whose monogram is still visible in the nave. The apse was built in the following century during the reign of Bishop Agnellus. The apse mosaics were destroyed during an earthquake in 1688, which lead to reconstructions and modifications over centuries to come. An old sarcophagus holding the remains of Bishop Agnellus and San Sergio Martire can be found at the altar of the basilica. Luca Longhi's painting hanging above it depicts St Agatha in the midst of St Catherine of Alexandria and St Cecilia of Rome.
