Gem of the early Renaissance

The banker Giovanni Romei commissioned the construction of a residential house in 1445. To this day, the early Renaissance building Casa Romei remains in good condition and is regarded a true gem. Among the highlights is the inner courtyard adorned with loggias combining stylistic elements of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Mural paintings in the Sala delle Sibille and the Sala dei Profeti depict humanistic and religious topics. Another interesting part of the Casa Romei is the Piano Nobile, which Cardinal Ippolito II d’Este had converted into a guest wing and furnished with contemporary grotesques.
