Palazzo Municipale
Former ducal palace of the Este
Palazzo Municipale served as ducal palace to the ruling Este family up to the relocation to Castello Estense in the 15th century. Most of the constructional system date back to this time except for the neo-Gothic front, which was added at the beginning of the 20th century. The magnificent 15th century stairway of honour is the greatest eye-catcher. Roofed and capped with a cupola, it is flanked by Niccolò III Este riding a horse on one side and the enthroned Duke Borso d’Este on the other side. Today, the Palazzo Municipale serves as city hall.
