Chiesa di San Giorgio in Braida
A former Benedictine monastery along the Adige river
The Chiesa di San Giorgio in Braida is built on the foundations of a Benedictine monastery from the turn of the second millennium. Apart from the beautiful Romanesque bell tower dating from the 12th century, nothing remains of the former monastery today. In the 15th century it fell into the hands of the canons of San Giorgio of Venice who rebuilt it. The beautiful white marble façade still bears the traces of French rifle fire from 1791 when Napoleon took the city of Verona.
In addition to its façade of columns, the beautiful dome, built by Sanmicheli in 1540, is also noteworthy. The rest of the church is made of brick. Inside the beautiful nave you can admire Tintoretto’s first masterpiece, “The Baptism of Christ”, directly above the entrance. Two other masterpieces by Paolo Veronese can be found around the high altar under the dome: “The Miracle of St. Barnaby” and the “Martyrdom of St. George.”
