Santa Maria Formosa
Church of the fat Mary
The church of Santa Maria Formosa was built at the end of the 15th century by Mauro Coducci. The Baroque bell tower dates from the 17th century. The church got its name Formosa (“fat”) according to a legend in which the Virgin Mary appeared inform of a plump servantto Bishop Magnus and asked him to the establish the church. Inside the Renaissance building you should primarily focus on two masterpieces. The altarpiece “Madonna of Mercy” by Bartolomeo Vivarini and “St. Barbara” by Palmat he Elder–both are very beautiful works.
