San Salvador
Beautiful church along the Mercerie
The church of San Salvador is located near the Rialto Bridge at the beginning of the Mercerie. The beautiful Renaissance church was built the beginning of the 16th century by Sansovino and Tullio Lombardo. In addition to the remarkable three domes, the two graves and some art treasures are also worth a visit. The magnificent tomb of Doge Francesco Venier on the left is especially eye catching. The cemetery wall at the front of the transept house contains the mortal remains of the Venetian patrician family Corner. These include Caterina Corner, the former Queen of Cyprus. Titian painted the “Transfiguration” on the high altar and the “Annunciation”. Paris Bordone created the “Martyrdom of St. Theodore” in the Cappella del Santissimo.
