Trade centre in the heart of Veneto
The inconspicuous but important trading town of Oderzo northeast of Treviso is surprisingly beautiful. The small town has always been a centre for trade, agriculture and transport. Thanks to a navigable canal to the Adriatic, it was once even used as a river port. The remains of the Roman era can today be seen in the city centre and in the archaeological museum. When the Lombards invaded the region after the fall of the Roman Empire, the former inhabitants of Oderzo fled to the lagoon of Venice and founded a small settlement – today’s Jesolo.
Attractions in Oderzo
The central square in the charming old town is the Piazza Grande with the magnificent dome from the 13th century with its slightly sloping campanile. It was built on the ruins of the old town castle and has Gothic and Renaissance elements. In the monumental nave interior there are several notable paintings – including a canvas cycle by Pomponio Amalteo from the 16th century, “Madonna and Child” by Bellunello (1477) and the “Descent of the Holy Spirit” and some other works by Palma il Giovane and his students. In front of the cathedral you can enjoy a beautiful view of the frescoed facade of the Casa Saccomani.

Another highlight of Oderzo is the Torresin, an ancient gate tower including a small clock tower, which was restored completely in 1930. The picturesque old town of Oderzo offers its visitors a wealth of interesting attractions and beautiful places: the Piazza Castello with the elegant Renaissance facade of the Palazzo di Porcia e Brugnera, a large network of small, winding streets where it’s easy to get lost, numerous archaeological remains and excavations scattered throughout the city and much more. The ancient Venetian city of is full of remarkable places and corners. Do not miss a stroll from the Torresin through the Via Umberto I with its innumerable arcades of the frescoed noble buildings and mansions and back again over the picturesque Gattol Monticano bridge along the river from where you can enjoy a magnificent view over the town.
The Pinacoteca Alberto Martini in the Palazzo Contarini-Foscolo houses the most important works by the artist from Oderzo.
