Orto Botanico
Botanic garden and world heritage
Not far from the Prato della Valle is the Orto Botanico – one of the oldest and most beautiful botanical gardens in Europe. It was established in 1545 by the Senate of the Republic of Venice to ensure the cultivation of medicinal plants and to have sufficient illustrative material for students of the medical university. The plant collections were expanded steadily to include specimens from all over the world, and Padua quickly played a major role in the exploration of exotic plants. In 1997 the Botanical Garden became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Even today, the Orto Botanico serves as a training facility for pharmacy and biology students and for the preservation of rare plant species.
