The underworld of Syracuse
A few steps south of the cathedral is the unassuming entrance to the underworld of Syracuse. Already in ancient times, corridors and caves were driven into the rock under the city that have been developed more and more over time. During World War II, the corridors served as a bomb shelter during bombing raids. The tunnel system is also relatively cool in the summer months, therefore appropriate clothing is advantageous. The accessible part of an amazing tunnel system ends at sea level near the Fonte Arethusa.
