The Sanctuary of Demeter
North of the Castello di Lombardia rises a mighty rock, the Rocca di Cerere, on which the famous temple of Demeter (Latin Ceres) was once situated. Unfortunately, besides some rocky tracks, nothing remains of the former sanctuary. However, contemporary historians like Cicero described it as a unique, almost divine place of worship where the people worshiped the glorious image of Ceres. In 173 BC, Roman soldiers broke into the temple and stole the image – the former place of worship has fallen into disrepair since then.
