Palazzo Biscari
The most important palace in Catania
The Palazzo Biscari is the most important palace in Catania. The Palazzo Biscari was built in several stages from 1707 to 1763 by the family Paterno Castello, the princes of Biscari. The architect was the Baroque architect Alonzo di Benedetto. The ornate window frames on the exterior facade were designed by the sculptor Antonino Amato from Messina. The ornate interior is decorated in the rococo style. Ignazio Biscari, the grandson of the founder, finally expanded the palace to have more space for his collections of paintings, vases, coins and many other antique exhibits. Johann Wolfgang Goethe visited Prince Biscari in 1787 – he reported in detail in his writings about the magnificence of the collections and the palace.
