Rifugio Sapienza
Starting point for Etna tours
The Rifugio Sapienza is a shelter for the Alpine Club at 1,935 metres above sea level. It can be reached via a good road from Nicolosi. This is the end point if you are journeying by car. The Silvestri Crateri, the volcanic craters formed in 1893, are within walking distance from here and well worth a visit. If you want to visit Europe's largest volcano more closely, you can take the cable car from here to the station on Mount Etna. On the mountain station a mountain guide will take you to 2,900 metres above sea level, from where you have a good view of the recent eruption craters. Climbing to the main crater is possible depending on weather conditions and volcanic activity.
