Zafferana Etnea
Starting point for hikes on Mount Etna
Zafferana Etnea is a pretty little town on the eastern edge of Mount Etna. The location on the slopes of Mount Etna amidst centuries-old lava streams makes it a popular base for hiking and sightseeing tours in the Etna area. The close proximity to the eruption craters often creates problems for the small town. During the great Etna eruption in 1992 the small town was spared by a miracle - the lava flow stopped 800 metres before the village.
In the village itself it is worth visiting the parish church and taking a short walk through the main square where you can enjoy a magnificent view of the sea.
