Castello di Maniace
Benedictine abbey and castle near Bronte
About 13 kilometres north of Bronte, the pistachio capital of Sicily, there is the Benedictine abbey of Maniace. The name of the abbey, which is also known as Castello di Maniace, dates back to the Byzantine general Gerogios Maniaces who defeated the Arabs on the battlefield here in 1040. As a token of gratitude, King Ferdinand IV gave the Castello di Maniace including the town of Bronte to the British Admiral Nelson in 1799.
It is definitely worth visiting the abbey. In contrast, other than the pistachio orchards around the village, Bronte itself offers very little to see.
