Small town south of the Alban Hills
Velletri is a small town on a rocky outcrop in the south of the Alban Hills. Due to extensive damage in the 2nd World War, the centre is very modern today - only the symbol of the city, the 50-metre high Torre del Trivio from 1353 remains in the main Piazza Cairoli. Also worth seeing is the old town hall, with its mighty colonnade in the Piazza del Comune. On the ground floor of the Town Hall there is a small museum with interesting archaeological finds. Among the exhibits is a Roman sarcophagus with reliefs from the life of Hercules. Also worth visiting is the Cathedral of San Clemente, which was built on the remains of a Roman basilica from the 4th Century. The highlight inside is the old Byzantine reliquary, the "Cross of Velletri".
