San Luigi dei Francesi
The National Church of the French
The church of San Luigi dei Francesi is the national church of the French in Rome. It is dedicated to the French king Louis the saint and was built by Pope Clement VII in the 16th Century. The monumental Renaissance façade was created by Giacomo della Porta. Worth seeing in the interior of the three-nave pillar basilica are three paintings of Caravaggio from the 16th Century. They represent the life of St. Matthew and perfectly reflect Caravaggio's revolutionary light and shadow style. The artist incidentally portrayed himself in the painting of the martyrdom on the left side, next to the executioners.
