Art Gallery in a noble palace
The Galleria Colonna is located in the huge palace of the noble Colonna family. It was built in the 17th Century by Antonio del Grande and Girolamo Fontana. In addition to ancient sculptures it houses the famous collection of paintings of Cardinal Girolamo I Colonna. Highlights of the collection are the painting "Portrait of a gentleman" by Veronese, "Narcissus at the source" by Tintoretto and the "Portrait of Lucrezia Colonna Tomacelli" by Van Dyck. Many other paintings show achievements and exploits of members of the Colonna family. Marcantonio Colonna defeated as Western commander of the naval forces the Turks in the Battle of Lepanto in 1571.
