Santa Maria della Vittoria
Beautiful church with a miraculous portrait and statues by Bernini
The church of Santa Maria della Vittoria was once dedicated to Saint Paul. When the Emperor Ferdinand II won an important victory in the 30 Years War in Pilsen, it was said to be because of a miraculous image of the Virgin, which was brought immediately to Rome. After Mary brought the victory, the church was consecrated to her and the miraculous image was brought into the high altar, where it can still be admired today. Also worth seeing is the Cornaro chapel which houses some beautiful statues by Bernini. Natural light from a small window is concentrated on the statue of St. Theresa of Avila and Bernini's figures shine in a natural white light. The sensuous representation of the angel who handed the saints the Arrow of Love of God was criticized at that time.
