Camera dei Deputati
The Roman parliament in the Palazzo Montecitorio
The Palazzo Montecitorio was designed by Bernini in 1650 for Pope Innocent X, who planned a residence for the Pamphili family. After the death of the Pope the construction work stopped until the building was finished by Carlo Fontana in 1685. It served as the seat of the papal court. Since 1871 the Italian Chamber of Deputies has met in the "palace of power".
On the Piazza Montecitorio in front of the palace there extends into Heaven a mighty obelisk from the 6th Century B.C. Emperor Augustus brought it from Egypt to Rome and used it as a pointer for the famous Sundial of Augustus. The clock itself is 7 metres below the current street level.
