Santa Maria in Porto
Basilica with Sanctuary of the Greek Madonna
One of the city's most important churches is located in close proximity to the Museo d'Arte della Città di Ravenna. Basilica Santa Maria in Porto houses the Sanctuary of the Greek Madonna. According to legend, it appeared to the monk Pietro degli Onesti on 8 April 1100, the first Sunday after Easter, which has since become the date for the festival of the Madonna Greca. The first stone laying of the basilica dedicated to her took place on 13 September 1553. Even though the late baroque church was only finished in 1631 the icon of the Greek Madonna already found her temporary home here in 1606 during the sanctification of the archbishop of Ravenna.
