Villafranca di Verona
Southern bastion of the Scaliger
Villafranca di Verona is located just south of Verona Airport and was one of the main southern bastions of the Scala family. With its still mighty appearance, the Scaliger castle in the city entre was part of a major line of defence against the south from Sirmione on Lake Garda via Villa Franca to Sanguinetto. 8 large square towers protect the city walls from the outside. The main tower (Mastio) and a resistance museum (Museo del Risorgimento) can be visited on the weekends.
Also worth seeing is the Museo Nicolis, which includes a large exhibition on the development of traffic and transport systems. The museum is especially famous for its unique classic car, bicycle and motorcycle collection.
