Verona on a weekend
The most ideal option for visiting and touring Verona is a stay of several days. Weekend stays, in particular, are a great way to take in the main attractions and offer you the chance to experience the flair of Verona. Strolling through the many markets, a tour through the old city centre of Verona with its numerous shops, winding streets cafés and restaurants, a visit to one of the many museums or even an opera performance in the Roman arena can be a wonderful experience for a weekend in Verona.
Weekend trip to Verona
If you can spend a whole weekend in Verona, you not only have the advantage of seeing the city in all its beauty but can also can taste some culinary highlights and enjoy an opera in the Roman arena in the summer. Purchasing a VeronaCard for 2 days comes highly recommended as the card will have more than paid for itself on the first half day.
Day 1 in the morning:
- The tour starts at the Piazza Brà, the main square in the centre of Verona.
- The first destination is the Arena di Verona (VeronaCard is valid) – the impressive Roman amphitheatre that dominates the square. Those who want to see an opera performance in the arena should go now to the ticket office behind the arena and purchase a ticket before they are sold out.
- Now the tour leads along the numerous boutiques and shops in the Via Mazzini to the Via Cappello.
- Turn left here to reach the Piazza delle Erbe, the commercial centre of Verona where you can experience a bustling market on most days.
- Heading through an archway on the right-hand side, you will reach the Piazza dei Signori, the political centre of Verona.
- After visiting the tombs of the Scala family at the northeastern end of the Piazza, you should definitely go up to the top of the Torre dei Lamberti (VeronaCard is valid) and enjoy the wonderful view over the city.
- At lunch time you can stop off at one of the restaurants or cafés in the Piazza dei Signori and Piazza delle Erbe for a short break.
Day 1 in the afternoon:
- From the Piazza delle Erbe walk down the Via Cappello for about 50 metres and you will see the house of Juliet (VeronaCard is valid) to your left. If you enter the house through the archway, you will reach the courtyard with a bronze statue of Juliet and the famous balcony. If you want to stand on Juliet’s balcony, you have to go through the adjoining museum, which displays everyday objects from the period of Romeo and Juliet.
- Further down the Via Cappello you will pass by the Porta Leoni and reach the Chiesa San Fermo Maggiore (VeronaCard is valid), a beautiful example of typical Veronese church construction.
- Continue over the Pone Navi and left along the Adige to the Chiesa San Tomaso. Inside the church is the tomb of Sanmichele.
- From the church, follow the Via Carducci to the Palazzo Giusti with its magnificent Gardino Giusti Renaissance gardens. From the top terrace you will have a beautiful view over Verona in the afternoon sun.
Day 1 in the evening:
- Once you have returned to the city centre to the Giardino Giusti, you will have the option of having dinner at one of the numerous small and large restaurants and taste the Veronese cuisine and cast your mind back over the day with a glass of wine. If you want to go shopping again, you can stroll along the Via Mazzini until 9 p.m.
- Lucky owners of an opera ticket should get to the arena at least one hour before the performance to grab a perfect spot.
