Custoza
Theatre of war around Verona
The small town of Custoza gained notoriety as the setting for two big battles. In 1848 the Austrians under Field Marshall Radetzky defeated the rebellious Italians. In 1866 the Italians lost a second time in the same place against the Austrians – this time under the leadership of Archduke Albrecht. In memory of the many casualties of these battles a vast charnel house (ossario) was erected in Custoza. It has the form of an obelisk and is placed on a hill – visible for all from far away. From the top of the obelisk you have a wonderful view over the surrounding countryside. In the basement, thousands of bones form a huge pile – a silent witness to the cruel slaughter.
