Beautiful church with several styles
No other building can trace the development of architectural styles in Venice as well as the church of San Zaccaria. The church was designed by Mauro Coducci and Antonio Gambello in the late 15th century. The massive facade is an impressive example of the use of old Gothic structure in the new basic style of the early Renaissance. This mix of styles runs through the entire complex. While the Campanile is Byzantine, the chorus appears in a beautiful Gothic style and the nave represents the style of the early Renaissance.
Besides the various styles, San Zaccaria also houses a late work by the master Giovanno Bellini: “Madonna Enthroned with Saints Peter, Catherine, Lucia and Saint Jerome.” San Zaccaria was more secular than most of the church buildings in Venice. Rich patrician daughters who had no place in their families were deported here and took revenge from their existence in the fun-loving Venice in their own way.
