San Trovaso
Church and former shipbuilder quarter
The San Trovaso church was originally dedicated to two saints: Gervase and Protasius. For simplicity, the cumbersome name of Santi Gervasio e Protasio was shortened to San Trovaso. San Trovaso has two beautiful facades that – according to a legend – are based on the entrances of two warring families. The interior is relatively simple, but San Trovaso still has some nice paintings – among them the “Last Supper” by Tintoretto and the “Temptation of St. Anthony” by Michele Giambono.
Outside the church runs the Rio di San Trovaso, on which one of the last gondola shipyards in Venice is located. In the Squero San Trovaso the black and gold shiny gondolas continue to be built today. If you go a little further south to the Giudecca canal, you reach the Zattere promenade. Here the logs from the Venetian hinterland were delivered and shipped to the craft producer and shipyards for further processing.
