San Giovanni Crisostomo
Mauro Coducci’s masterpiece
The small church of San Giovanni Crisostomo is one of Mauro Coducci’s masterpieces in Venice. It is dedicated to the holy Chrysostom, one of four Greek Church Fathers, and was built in the 15th century on the foundations of a previous building. In the interior you will find in the first side chapel on the right-hand side “Saint Jerome, Christopher and Augustine” – a late work by Giovanni Bellini. The high altar painting “Madonna with Saints” is by Sebastiano del Piombo.
The two small houses behind the church are also noteworthy. Their two names “Corte Prima” and “Corte Seconda del Milion” point to the famous navigator and explorer Marco Polo. His travel reports were dubbed “Il Milione”. Therefore, the family of Marco Polo presumably also lived in this neighbourhood.
