I Gesuiti
Jesuit church with a masterpiece of Titian
After a long period of dispute with the pope, the Jesuits finally were allowed to build a church in Venice. Therefore the baroque church I Gesuiti was built in 1729 in the northeast of Venice. Massive columns, wall panels made of green and white marble and a magnificent interior impress visitors inside the church. Besides the wonderful impression the church has on the viewer, one painting is of particular importance. In the first chapel on the left-hand side the “Martyrdom of St. Lawrence” by Titian deserves special attention. Titian managed to convey a glimmer of light and the hope of eternal life like no other before him. The “Assumption” in the left transept is by Tintoretto. Palma the Younger painted the ceiling fresco in the sacristy.
