San Giovanni in Bragora
Late Gothic parish church of Vivaldi
The much older church of San Giovanni in Bragora was recast in a late Gothic style at end of the 15th century. In the three-nave interior you can find a baptismal font in the left aisle, where Antonio Vivaldi was baptised. A copy of his baptismal certificate still recalls that moment. Apart from the font, San Giovanni in Bragora also houses some highlights of Venetian painting from the early Renaissance: A triptych by Bartolomeo Vivarini in the right aisle, in the first left-hand side chapel, the painting “Resurrection” by Alvise Vivarini and the “Baptism of Christ” by Cima da Conegliano in the choir. Above the entrance you can also admire “Christ before Caiaphas” – a work by Palma the Younger.
