Fondaco dei Turchi
Old Venetian palace with the Natural History museum
The Fondaco dei Turchi is one of the oldest palaces in Venice. It dates from the 13th century and was constructed in typical Venetian-Byzantine style. On the canal side the open portico with its tower-like side wings are particularly impressive. The palace was originally built by the wealthy merchant family Pesaro. From the 14th century it served as residence for state guests and from 1621 as a trading house for Turkish merchants. The appearance of the palace changed through the centuries and was reconstructed in the style of the 13th century in 19th century.
Today the Fondaco dei Turchi houses the Natural History museum of Venice. The museum’s main attractions are the aquarium and a 7 metre-long and 4 metre-high dinosaur skeleton from the Sahara.
