The heart of the maritime republic of Venice
Besides the economic success of its merchants, the power of the Doge Republic of Venice was based on a strong and powerful navy that protected trade routes and conquered new territories. The constant building and repairing of ships was therefore vital for ensuring the republic’s naval might. The Arsenale, the former shipyard, thus developed very quickly to become the heart of the maritime republic. Big bellied merchant ships were constructed here as well as agile war galleys. Thanks to strong organisation of work processes, similar to a modern production line, the 16,000 workers were able to build more than 100 ships per year, which meant that the Arsenale was one of the largest and most efficient shipyards in the world until the 18th century. For defensive reasons the Arsenal was extended to become a huge fortress – an approach was possible only by sea or through a single gate.
A visit to the former model company and heart of the maritime republic of Venice is mainly worthwhile on account of the historic ship museum. Here you can find many exhibits of the maritime power of Venice and lots of information on shipbuilding, naval warfare and maritime trade. In addition to merchant and warships, the museum also contains an impressive Gondola collection. Among the exhibits you can also find a burned out state galley of the Doge.
